Reflection on the project

If I look back to what skills, I had at the beginning of the year to date I have vastly improved in my design software skills by far. I mainly concentrated in 3d and used software like Photoshop for textures within my 3d environments before this final year. I wanted this year to be more design focused so that I have more knowledge in creative design and combine this with with my 3d skills and move closer to my creative director goal.

Throughout all the projects this year I have used Illustrator more and more and looking back I should’ve only used Illustrator for this hotstar project. I used Photoshop to quickly put together some designs for the client because I knew this software well but in doing this the client liked the squashed version of the initial design more. Having to then adapt to this and design something as close to that as possible but to a high quality professional level was not the best way to go about things.

This project has been a huge learning curve in terms of design. I found it benefited me sketching with the client and taking my MacBook Pro to our meeting so that I can show him idea’s and have everything ready to hand. This created more ideas to flow and showed the client how well I knew the software which was a big plus, he also saw all the research I did and I even educated him on Under Armour’s history and why they have quickly become successful. The client and I have been in regular contact which helped iron out any design issues and moved the project along faster, it is great to have a client that is so keen to get the project up and running.

Throughout the design stages I would ask fellow students questions in tutorials or via Facebook. It helps having fellow designers give you feedback because they not only suggest other ways to achieve what you are trying to achieve but also give you creative idea’s which you may not have even thought about. I also kept the client in the loop and once the final design was done I posted it on our degree course Facebook page for feedback. I have found from experience in previous projects that speaking up in tutorials and asking people for their feedback directly is a great way to bounce idea’s around and get truthful feedback.

I am very happy with the design of both logos. They look bright, simple, neat and show a well thought out brand and clothing logo design. I have fully enjoyed this project and all the research learning to design what I have designed. I look forward to working with this client further.

Further Client Contact

This project was about me designing a company and clothing logo which is to be shown on a work in progress website. The client isn’t ready to have the website fully up and running at the moment, there are no images of the clothing, descriptions or any other data yet to be added. I have fulfilled my part in this company’s progress so far, I have designed both the company and clothing logo, found a theme on WordPress that the client would like, uploaded it to his hosting and added a static page with the clothing logo (I didn’t see the point in adding the company logo with the web address on it because you are already on the website).

The client has asked me to work with him further on the progression of setting up hotstar by me continuing to add to the website and continue branding. I have done a lot of research for this project and had some great conversations with the client on how to move forward with the company in terms of social media campaigns, company promotion etc and he would like me to do this with him. I am very excited about this. During my years at university I have gathered a lot of knowledge in the software I am able to use and I am excited about using this knowledge to help start up a new company. I know how to create social media sites, design campaign posters and with my previous work background in sales I am able to help promote this company.

Having this client has been a blessing in my progression moving forward during and after university to gain experience and expand my portfolio. I am a creative designer and want to build my skills to become a creative director and managing this project has been a great experience towards my end goal. I will still have to further learn in branding and promotion for example but I am looking forward it.

Logo is on the website!

I have amended some of the themes files and added the logo onto the website. This is just to have the image up for you to see. I have created a static page for the front page, I further altered this by using the grid template and added this to the page. please see screen shots below.

I added the star on it’s own to show up on site identity as well as altering the colours to a white with a greyish edge. I tried and tested the logo size which is why there are so many uploads in the library but I feel this one works better, the others were too close to the edge and cropped way to much by WordPress.

This website will edited at a later date to have the company’s mission statement as well as all the sportswear clothing and descriptions. The client has not yet got all of the images and descriptions to add onto the website.

Group Feedback

I have received a good amount of feedback from the ADMP Facebook group page and the clear winner is the first logo I put up!

Only one came back saying the 2nd one which is the image on the right…

I am very happy with the feedback because the first one was also my favourite. I like how it all starts at the same point and ends at the same point, almost like a reflection. I think it looks more solid as a logo, neater and more professional.

I only have a few slight changes with the outline of the text in Illustrator and I am finished, ready to upload to the website!

I contacted 123-reg

I have spoken to the client and he asked that seeing as I was already logged in with 123-reg and trying to sort the website if I could contact them online because he tried calling and it had an hours waiting time… I agreed because the sooner this problem is sorted the better 🙂 plus I had already tried to rectify by deleting the wordpress files in the directory and starting again…

Here is the support chat…

This was great support from them and quick! I am so glad this problem is now sorted… I had to delete the existing ones to ensure it worked..

I’m pleased this is now sorted, I can concentrate on uploading the new logo now.

Host problems

I set up the hosting for Hotstar and had made a start changing the theme ready for my logo to be uploaded. The website change didn’t come up immediately after I changed it but I put this down to the fact it can usually take 24 hours for the host changes to the domain. When I came to check up on it the day after the change still had not been made. I looked into this further and the website works when you log in and visit the website within the hosting but if you just type in http://www.hotstar.co.uk it doesn’t work!? I looked on http://www.stateside.co.uk website because it has the same hosting, the client purchased a host package and it allows up to a 100 websites on the same host, stateside came up as suspended!!!! I looked into this further and found a recent issue with 123reg.

I changed the Ivp4 address but this didn’t work either, I contacted the client and explained all of this situation and explained what I had read, about what happened with 123reg, he will contact them to rectify the issue… It’s a good job he wasn’t trying to make money on this project yet or any other website he has with them!

According to the article I read in the Daily Mail quite a few people have been affected. The client had received an email about this but wasn’t sure exactly what it was about, he had been given a Ivp4 address which was the same one I tried using which I took from one of his other websites but as I explained this didn’t work either… I’m awaiting him to get back to me regarding all of this.

Company Mission Statement

I have approached my client again about putting together a company mission statement, before my client was concentrated more on the design and setting up a themed showcase website that he had not thought about it. I have since read a few articles on company mission statements to familiarise myself of them to try and help. I have found a great article in Forbes called Answer 4 Questions to Get a Great Mission Statement which looked really useful. It asks four questions which are;

  • What do we do?
  • How do we do it?
  • Whom do we do it for?
  • What value are we bringing?

It gave two great examples of two companies answering all these questions within one statements, here is one of them:

“For example, Advanced Auto Parts mission statement is: “It is the Mission of Advance Auto Parts to provide personal vehicle owners and enthusiasts with the vehicle related products and knowledge that fulfill their wants and needs at the right price. Our friendly, knowledgeable and professional staff will help inspire, educate and problem-solve for our customers.””

I spoke to the client about this and he has kept it all for reference and to consider but he feels the company isn’t established enough yet to have a mission statement, he could only answer two of the four questions with ease;

  • What do we do? make high quality active wear that merge with the latest fashion
  • How do we do it? all garments are designed and manufactured in the UK

This is something I will mention to him again at a later date.
